We have a really simple way of coming up with product ideas at Alpha. We don't do market research, we don't look at what product categories are "hot", or even what industries are on the upswing. Instead, we do something so brain-dead simple. We solve an actual problem that we have. That's it.

The way we see it, we're not unique as human beings go. There are a lot of people out there; there's a high likely hood that there is a sizable portion of individuals who are experiencing the same frustrations that we are. So we solve it.

And we solve the problem "selfishly", meaning we solve it with only us in mind. As if we are the ONLY people people who will end up using it. In the worst case scenario that's true. If no one ever uses our products, then at a minimum we've solved our problem. The best case scenario, we've solved the problem not only for ourselves, but others and we've created a sustainable business in the process. Who could ask for more?

For the longest time I was brainwashed, as I'm sure many other first time entrepreneurs are, of the notion of "first mover advantage". That you've got a huge advantage to launching your product first. To be fair, I took it to an extreme. In the early days, if I saw a competitor launch before me, I would kill my project entirely. I didn't launch first = I lost the war.

In retrospect this was absolutely moronic. Today, with a little bit more clarity and hopefully with a little bit more wisdom, I realize that the first mover has a lot of disadvantages. The position of power lies with the second, third, x mover. Not the first.

When you're first, you've got to figure everything out entirely on your own. You've got to define what your product means, you've got to build up demand for your product. Even simple things like how does a customer do X? When you're first you've got to figure all that stuff out on your own.

Contrast that with coming in second or third. You can see what works and what doesn't and make your improvements. Effectively, you've made your competition do your R&D and marketing for you.

Historically this is true. The products and services that we've come to love we're not the first of their kind. Google was not the first search engine, Apple was not the first company to make mp3 players, smart phones, or tablets. Facebook was not the first social network. They all had the ability to sit back and let the first mover make all the mistakes and learn from them.

Jobs even addressed this in an interview regarding the development of the iPad:
